Attention Craft Wineries! Deadline for TTB Comments on Bottle Labeling is March 29th

By Published On: March 27, 2024

The TTB is actively seeking input from small craft wineries across the nation as part of a regulatory review process. This is a unique opportunity to influence future regulations impacting the labeling and advertising of wine and distilled spirits. Your insights and experiences are important feedback for the federal government as it considers changes that could significantly affect the industry labeling requirements, especially smaller operations.

In response to the U.S. Treasury Department’s February 2022 report on “Competition in the Markets for Beer, Wine, and Spirits,” and following President Biden’s Executive Order 14036 aimed at enhancing competition and providing tangible benefits to America’s consumers, workers, and small businesses, the TTB has initiated a series of public listening sessions, most recently held last month to gather perspectives on potential modifications to alcohol beverage labeling requirements.

For small craft wineries, the stakes are particularly high. Proposed changes could influence how products are perceived by consumers. They could also have financial implications due to adjustments in labeling practices. Topics under consideration include the clarity of current alcohol beverage labels, the importance of alcohol content per serving, nutritional information, ingredient lists, and the presence of major food allergens.

Industry perspectives are crucial in these discussions. How do you think these changes could impact your business? Are there specific types of nutritional information you believe are most relevant to your consumers? How do you anticipate any new mandatory labeling requirements would affect your costs and operations? The TTB is especially interested in understanding the potential challenges and opportunities these regulations might pose for small businesses or those entering the market.

The deadline for submitting written comments is March 29. This is your chance to ensure that the voices of small wineries are heard. Your feedback can help shape policies that are fair, realistic, and supportive of small businesses within the wine industry.

To participate, visit the TTB’s online portal and submit your comments.  By sharing your experiences and insights, you can help shape a regulatory environment that supports the growth and sustainability of small wineries across the country. Don’t miss this opportunity to contribute to a dialogue that could define the future of wine labeling and advertising regulations.
